Countess Isabella of Mar (1277-1296)
Isabella was married twice- once to Maol Choluim II, Earl of Fife and then to Robert the Bruce (she was his first wife)- the latter being a bit more well known. She died before Robert was crowned King of Scots and was never crowned Queen. Which is confusing- all the depictions of her show her wearing a crown. I imagine this has to do with the times- there was a lot of turmoil surrounding the legitimacy of Robert as King- so maybe this was propaganda? not sure. More research needed.
Her father, who arranged her marriage to Bruce, was one of the seven guardians of Scotland. These guardians were the de facto heads of state. This was a significant role in the developing politics of the country. One of these guardians included Sir William Wallace.
She was married to Robert at the age of 18 and it was a very happy, loving (arranged) marriage. She died a few days after giving birth to Marjorie Bruce in 1296. Marjorie, who was previously featured on this blog, led a very tragic life. Despite the troubles and untimely death at age 19 (same age as her mother when she died), her descendants include the House of Stuart and all their successors on the thrones of Scotland, England and the United Kingdom.
