Agatha Southeil (1470? – 1486?)

Not too much is known about Agatha. She is said to have been an orphan “of loose morals” and was also “slothful and idle.” Because of this she was a social outcast and accused of witchcraft and prostitution. When she became pregnant out of wedlock, the village said she had slept with the devil himself.

She gave birth in a cave to an extremely deformed child, Ursula- who later took the name- Mother Shipton. Ursula’s deformities came to depict the stereotypical appearance of a witch- hook nose, pointy chin, warts, etc.

Agatha is thought to have died in the cave (a tourist attraction) during childbirth around the age of 15.
